Lab box vs RGB gamuts

How the edges of a CIELAB code range line up with the sRGB, Display P3 and Adobe RGB (1998) gamut boundaries.

"Outside" on Lab-box faces and slices = outside the reference gamut. On gamut faces it means outside the Lab box: those colors can't be encoded.

Reading it

Each object is drawn as a cube with 12 edges. In CIELAB, the RGB cubes bend; switch the view to an RGB space and its cube becomes straight while the Lab box bends instead. Edge casing color tells you which space an edge belongs to. The core shows the actual color along that edge. Contour lines on surfaces mark where they cross another space's boundary, using that space's casing color.

Volumes are in CIELAB units (ΔE*ab³), sampled on a 1 × 2.5 × 2.5 grid.
